On May 30, 2023, the National Environmental Agency issued an environmental decision for the construction and operation of the Bakhvi 2 Hydropower Plant on the Bakhviscala River, which will be powered by natural runoff.
Giorgi Abramishvili, Director of Bakhvi HPP, commented on the development, stating: “Today, we received the environmental decision for the Bakhvi 2 HPP project on the Bakhviscala River, near the village of Ukanava in Guria. We are now moving to the next stage. We are currently working on construction permits. It has been three years since we began our presence in the region, and we have become well-acquainted with both the people and the environment. We are pleased to have the opportunity to build a hydropower plant that aims to be a leading example in environmental and social management. This achievement is not only due to our efforts as project developers but also to the local community, whose recommendations have been vital in refining and optimizing the project. We extend our heartfelt thanks to every individual who cares deeply and wants the best for their region. Special thanks to the members of the Bakhvi HPP Advisory Council and representatives of non-governmental organizations whose involvement has enabled us to make this project exemplary for the region and the country.”
The project's environmental impact assessment report was publicly discussed on December 21, 2022, in the village of Mtispiri, Ozurgeti Municipality. The public hearing saw unprecedented support from the local population (Mtispiri community) and representatives of non-governmental organizations operating in the municipality.
