Water Ecosystem
The projects of Bakhvi 1 and Bakhvi 2 hydropower plants include plans for both fish divertors and fish passes to be installed at every intake. These fish divertors and fish passes are designed to enable uninterrupted movement for fish both upstream and downstream along the riverbed. In adherence to rigorous environmental standards and the requirements set forth by the National Environment Agency, baseline assessment was conducted by a highly reputable ichthyologyspecialist to assess the condition of the river. Building upon the findings of this baseline assessment, ongoing monitoring of impacts and implementation of suitable mitigation measures will be undertaken.
The operational process of both the Bakhvi 1 and Bakhvi 2 hydropower plants does not cause water pollution at any stage. It is important to note that, in accordance with international standards, measures to mitigate water and land pollution are taken into consideration during the construction phase.
Throughout the operation phase, Bakhvi HPP will annually conduct fish propagation efforts in the Bakhvistskali River. The specific objective is to strengthen the fish population by releasing a total of 34,000 whitebaits into the river. This strategy is acknowledged as effective in enhancing fish populations and is supported by similar practices observed in other hydropower plants across Georgia.
